Landscape Photography, Australian Landmarks – Coolangatta, Snapper Rocks Sunrise
Hi Guys. Can safely say I’m over my jet lag now, this trip really hit me for six, so I’m now pretty much back into the swing of things. I’m about to move back down to the midlands, my time in Cheshire is coming to the end and although I’ll be sad to leave the beautiful peaks I am looking forward to new beginnings and some more landscape photography adventures further south!
Anyway, I digress – this shot is from a place called Snapper Rocks, located just behind Tweed Heads on the Coolangatta coast. It’s a spot known worldwide for it’s surfing and if the size of some of the waves were anything to go by I can see why.
I had actually thought we might have the place to ourselves – my uncle Nick and I arrived at about 0520 and even at that time there was quite a few folks about, surfers and fishermen mainly, but a few others had just shown up for the light show I think. By the time I’d packed up there were about 20 surfers out, and more were walking down the beach to drop in from the rocks.
I was initially struggling for a composition and finally settled for what i thought worked here, the silhouetted headland sloping into the ocean and the rocks leading out to the pre-sunrise sun all drawing the eye out to the lovely warm glow.
I opted for a long exposure here, 8 seconds in total, and even at this time the luminosity was bright enough to warrant a 0.6 ND grad and a 0.9 rev ND grad to hold it back, but not to much to flatten the waves right out. I was thinking of a panoramic but i just didn’t have the time to set up, I have made a 16×7 crop which is up on the gallery, have a look and let me know if it works, I think it works well in either format to be honest, the warm tones also seem to work well here.
Again, this is pretty much ‘out of the can’, very little work was needed just a little tweaking of the yellow and orange channels to bring it all in line. It turned out to be a pretty awesome start to the day, pretty much what landscape photography is all about!
Look forward to sharing some more of my East Coast adventure soon!
Catch you soon!
