Landscape Photography, Canada Landmarks, Consolation Lake

Canada landmarks and landscape photography, bear aware!?!

Ok, firstly an apology, I’ve been a bit skinny on my landscape photography blog of late, so here’s the beginning of me putting more content up and getting back into the groove of posting again!

I’ve been going back though my pictures of my Canada trip last year and have a few I’m going to post up and write about. This particular picture was captured in mid September at Consolation Lake in the Rockies, not too far from Lake Moraine, another beautiful Canada Landmarks.

Judging by the evidence dotted about all around us, right in the middle of berry season too! Apparently a favourite of the local brown and grizzly bear community as they begin taking on calories for their Winter hibernation. I have to admit this had me pretty well spooked for most of the hike.

A friend of mine was super cool about it all and really tried to help me relax. ‘After all’ she said, ‘we’re following all the park rangers recommendations, we’re making noise, we’ve got no snacks, and we’re in a group’. Hmm, of two… ‘and it’s mid afternoon, so they’re probably all still asleep’. While I tried to take this on-board, I still couldn’t shake that feeling of being watched…

I guess it was the sounds of the other valley animals that kept reminding me how far off-trail we were too, and it wouldn’t quite let me relax! An over active imagination conjuring up images of hungry momma bears getting ready for winter didn’t help much either…

Anyway, we actually made it to Consolation lake, unscathed. We spent about an hour taking in the scenery while listening to the glaciers creak and groan as the wildlife chattered-on in their own unique dialogue. During our stay at this beautiful Canada landmarks I made a few captures, this one being my favourite.

Everything is just so clean and crisp out here, nevertheless, it took some doing getting a half decent composition. This was mainly due to me not wanting to get my feet wet (it was ‘only’ just above freezing, ok!) by having to hop from boulder to boulder with my camera pack.

The light was very strong toward the right of the frame, so to account for it I side loaded a 0.6ND to one side, thus managing to rescue the highlights and not lose the shadows.

The circular polariser did a great job of cutting through the surface shine to reveal just enough of the rocks below. At the same time allow me to capture some of the beautiful reflections of the Larches and snow topped Quadra Mountains looming over us, this is what landscape photography is all about really.

All in all an awesome hike, even if I was being a big bear wuss!

Any visits to India? For a nomad, the journey comes full circle only when he has been to India 🙂
